Between Heartbeats and Hidden Secrets

Chapter 1

The sky was growing darker as a sleek black sedan pulled up to Thorn Alley 13. Passersby seldom saw luxury cars here, so an unknown young man glanced curiously as a sharply dressed man stepped out of the vehicle.

This man, Alexander Wren, looked sophisticated in his tailored suit, a case clutched in one hand, his shirt cuffs impeccably buttoned at his wrists. He exuded an air of professionalism that felt utterly out of place against the backdrop of the gritty alleyway.

As the car window rolled down, a young man’s face came into view, wearing a polite smile. “Attorney Wren, I appreciate you handling this case for me,” he said.

“Think nothing of it. Just getting you to this point is enough for now,” Alexander replied, his tone smooth yet casual.

“Alright then,” the young man responded, introducing himself as Frederick Greystone. He was a merchant who had recently shipped a cargo load to New London, only to have it detained by the Green Mountain Guild. He had sought out Alexander on the recommendations of some contacts within the Law Court, knowing that Alexander had some influence with the Guild.

After bidding farewell to Frederick, Alexander turned and walked into the alley. He had a striking appearance, and even his slight smile seemed to draw attention. With the sun setting, the light traced the sharp lines of his jaw, rendering him almost disarmingly handsome—qualities that certainly caught the eye of little Emma, who lived nearby.

As he strolled, Alexander prepared for a dinner with Captain Collins from the East Watch station the next day; he needed to familiarize himself with the case materials for an upcoming trial involving a brawl by the son of the chairperson from Dragon's Ledger Market.

Arriving at Wren Manor, he noticed the warm glow of a lamp spilling from inside. The light wasn't overly bright but cast a cozy yellow hue over the dining table. Turning left, he spotted a woman curled up asleep on a wicker chaise, her silhouette hugging a delicate form accentuated by a traditional cheongsam, her waist appearing even more slender in that pose.

Alexander paused, his heart fluttering momentarily. He set down his briefcase and slipped off his suit jacket before tiptoeing closer. Gently, he picked up a blanket that lay on the floor. Yet rather than drape it over her, he found himself leaning down to kiss her eyelids softly.

Cassandra Vale stirred at the contact, her sleepy eyes fluttering open just as Alexander’s cool, inviting lips met hers. His kiss was tender, with an unspoken promise of passion that sent a thrill through her.

“Why are you here?” he murmured, a hint of curiosity in his voice.

Cassandra took a moment to gather her thoughts. “Aunt Bess made some congee. I finished my share alone and figured you hadn’t eaten either, so I came to find you.”

He could easily picture Cassandra waiting in the quiet of his home, anticipation etched on her face as she waited for him to return from work. Sliding his arm around her shoulder, he helped her sit up. “You guessed right; I haven’t eaten yet. Stay a while with me,” he suggested, the request rolling off his tongue as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Cassandra didn’t need convincing; she nestled beside him at the dining table as he prepared to eat.

The meal consisted of seafood porridge, a specialty Aunt Bess had learned from her time in Hong Kong—its rich aroma still hung in the air. Cassandra had brought it in a thermal box, and it remained pleasantly warm. Alexander took his time eating, his every movement imbued with a grace that spoke of his refined upbringing.

Once they finished, he stood up to clear the dishes. Cassandra followed him quietly, standing just outside the compact kitchen, admiring his efficiency. This was the dynamic of their relationship—sharing silences laden with understanding. Cassandra cherished these moments; even Alfred, her confidante, noted how her laughter had increased lately.

Tonight, however, Alexander seemed unusually concerned. Even after tidying just a few utensils, he lingered with the dishware in his hands, staring out as if expecting something.

Finally, holding wet chopsticks, he turned to Cassandra seriously. “It’s raining,” he stated.

In the dimly lit alley, the moonlight barely seeped through the clouds, but the soft sound of raindrops could be heard.

Cassandra contemplated for a moment. “Should I go and call for a ride?”

At the same time, their voices aligned as they both said, “You should stay.”

Chapter 2

The two of them stood still for a moment, an unusual tension hung in the air.

“Stay over tonight. It’s late, and I can’t let you take a cab home alone,” Alexander Wren said quickly. “We can head to the gallery tomorrow. If you’re in a hurry, I’ll get up early and take you myself, alright?”

Cassandra Vale had no real reason to refuse. She had bought a condo near the gallery, and Aunt Bess sometimes came over to cook for her. Even if she went back, it wouldn’t be a problem. Besides, she had known Alexander for quite a while, and they had been dating for three months. If anything were to happen, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.

After they agreed, Cassandra settled into a rattan chair, engrossed in a book while Alexander sat beside her, reviewing documents he had brought home. The apartment was spacious — a one-bedroom that provided plenty of room, yet it was cozy enough for the two of them. Typically, Alexander worked at the desk against the wall, but today he’d chosen to stay by her side, perhaps to take care of her.

Cassandra found it hard to maintain the calm she had been imagining. Alexander had a strong presence. Even with space between them, she could feel his warmth — a heat that seemed to seep into her skin.

Just then, Alexander turned toward her suddenly, breaking the silence. “Do you mind wearing one of my shirts after your shower?”

He was at home in his gold-rimmed glasses, a lock of dark hair falling across his forehead, his look casual yet endearing. A hint of a smile played at the corners of his lips. “Sorry, I didn’t prepare any of your clothes. I’ll make sure to next time.”

Next time...

Cassandra realized she was losing the ability to speak around him today.

While getting ready for a shower, she discovered that there was no hot water. It seemed the pipes often ran cold in this part of town, but Cassandra had rarely encountered such a situation. She called out softly, “Alexander Wren.”

After a knock on the bathroom door, he stepped in right away.

His gaze darted over her, and she felt a rush of heat flush across her cheeks. She hadn’t changed out of her qipao yet, the top button undone, revealing her fair collarbone, bare feet resting on the water-slick floor.

Alexander quickly looked away. “What’s wrong?”

“There’s no hot water,” Cassandra admitted, a hint of embarrassment creeping into her voice.

He tensed for a moment, then knelt down to fiddle with the pipes for a minute. She watched him for a moment and could see he sighed heavily before standing up and walking towards her, acceptance hanging in the air.

The bathroom was small, just a few steps from where she stood to where he was now standing.

Curious about the shift, she heard him speak in a low voice, “Cassandra, are you feeling a bit nervous?”

That familiar term was one only reserved for family, and since growing up, few had called her that; even Alfred mostly referred to her by her last name.

Cassandra was momentarily caught off guard. “You mean…”

“I’m nervous too. My heart races whenever you’re near,” Alexander said, leaning in slightly and taking her hand, placing it over his heart. He let out a soft smile, his feelings evident and unabashed. “I really want you, you know.”

His eyes glanced down at her with intensity. “Cassandra, I’m thirty-one.

“At this age, I know what it means to love someone. If I’m reading you right, you might feel a little something for me too. Since neither of us wants to miss out on what we could have together, why not take our relationship a step further?”

Chapter 3

Cassandra Vale felt a familiar stirring deep within her as Alexander Wren spoke, a sensation that ignited a spark of the unknown. She recalled a similar moment three months prior when he had gently yet rationally asked her if they could be together. Back then, she had tried several times to speak, but the words had eluded her, an instinctual urge to retreat pulling her back—hadn't she already tasted the bitterness of love’s pain? Did she really want to repeat that cycle?

But Alexander Wren was nothing like her ex-husband, Matthew Longwind. Matthew loved no one, a cold blade whose indifference could cut through anything, not caring if his heart was laid bare or bloodied next to him. In contrast, Alexander was more like a warm spring, soothingly enveloping her wounds yet never too hot to burn. At that moment, Cassandra fought to suppress her fear, trying to meet his gaze. “I once loved deeply,” she confessed, “and I fear I might smother you with that love.”

“How fitting,” Alexander replied, his gentle smile revealing no surprise. “I feel the same.”

After a moment of silence, Cassandra added, “I can’t have children.”

“I can’t stand kids,” he chuckled softly, his eyes twinkling. “So we match well, don’t we? Just try being with me as if we were lovers. Can you do that?”

So... a trial, then.

Cassandra looked at him, her palms suddenly damp. Time stood still. This was the longest pause since they met; Alexander’s breath stilled briefly, just as he was about to speak when Cassandra leaned in and wrapped her arms around him.

Her soft lips brushed against his neck. “Have I told you how irresistibly charming you are when you try to persuade someone? Little Emma would certainly be enchanted by you.”

Cassandra felt Alexander’s breath quicken. One strong hand gripped her waist, lifting her slightly, while the other caught her chin, capturing her lips in a kiss. This kiss was unlike the tender one they shared before on the chair; it was more urgent, more demanding. Alexander's tongue dominated her mouth, swirling around hers as he guided her back until she was pinned against the wall.

“And what about you?” Alexander pressed, his forehead resting against hers, his fingers trailing down the side of her dress as he popped open the last decorative button, and his fingers slipped inside. “Have I enchanted you?”

His rough fingertips brushed her silk panties for a moment before he slipped them aside, gently caressing her soft petals. Cassandra’s body shuddered at his touch, yet she was still aware and present enough for a gasp to escape her lips. Just as she had gained control, her hand slipped to his waist to fumble with his belt buckle.

The moment she grasped him, she felt the heat, a throbbing life pulsing beneath her palm, evoking a mix of excitement and fear. Alexander let out a low, guttural groan in response.

Suddenly, he captured her wrist, his striking features remaining handsome even under the haze of desire. His eyelids drooped slightly, betraying a tension that was difficult to ignore. With a swift movement, he pinned her hands behind her, pressing her firmly against the wall. “Now, listen. Let me take the lead.”

In an instant, he bent down, teeth sinking into the decorative button of her dress, his warm breath making contact with her skin as he peeled it away—

“Mm…”

Cassandra felt herself awakening to an intensity that was new and electrifying.

Chapter 4

Alexander Wren started with gentle, tender kisses. He slowly took her nipple into his mouth, his tongue tracing delicate patterns as if cherishing something precious. But as moments passed, his restraint began to wear thin. One of his hands cupped her breast, experimenting with different pressures, squeezing and kneading, while his lips sucked more insistently.

Cassandra Vale could hardly stay upright, the back of her head hitting the cold wall behind her.

“Alexander, please...” she muttered, lost in the haze of her desires, not quite knowing what she was asking for. Her body felt empty inside, an aching need mounting between her legs, making her warm and wet.

Oblivious to her own pleading tone, Cassandra trembled.

Alexander Wren stood slightly straighter, his eyes drawn to her open neckline and the expanse of pale skin beneath, lingering on the sight of her stiff, suckled nipples. His gaze deepened, and then, without warning, he scooped her up and laid her on the bed.

The sensation of the soft mattress brought Cassandra back to her senses a little, and she tried to prop herself up.

But the next moment, Alexander pressed her back down firmly.

The mattress dipped slightly as Alexander knelt over her, straddling her waist with his knees, his body hovering above her.

There was an intensity to him that was impossible to ignore, but upon closer inspection, one could see the tension in the muscles beneath his shirt, and the way his pants, unbuttoned by Cassandra, revealed his aroused, throbbing member.

He, too, was nervous.

Alexander gripped her wrist tightly, his voice rough and low. “Tonight, just let me take the lead, alright?”

Before Cassandra could respond, Alexander’s fingers stiffened as he fumbled with the clasps of her dress, struggling particularly at her waistline.

In that moment, all his composure and sophistication vanished.

With a sudden, forceful tug, he ripped open her already disheveled dress, revealing the last layer of silk beneath.

Then he parted her legs assertively, bending down and biting at her panties, his tongue wetting the fabric as he began to kiss the delicate petals of her womanhood.

“Uhhh…”

An electric sensation seemed to shoot through Cassandra’s veins, making her body shiver.

“Please, just…”

Cassandra instinctively tried to squirm away, but Alexander pinned her down more firmly, his tongue pressing insistently against her entrance, teasing her through her soaked panties.

His nose brushed lightly against her clitoris with each movement, the rhythmic pressure of his hot breath driving her to the edge.

The chaotic stimulation made Cassandra’s toes curl, her inner lips twitching with an unbearable desire, releasing more of her arousal.

Soon enough, he pulled her drenched underwear down, not pausing for a moment as he positioned his throbbing hardness at her entrance, eagerly rubbing against the secret groove of her folds.

Her arousal had already coated the length of his shaft, running down to his veiny, bulging sac, but he still hadn’t taken the final step inside.

Cassandra had never endured such a prolonged foreplay before.

Her fingers clawed at Alexander’s back, her head tilting back, her voice trembling. “You can put it in—”

Just then, the erection that had been teasing her slipped from her clit to her entrance, entering her suddenly and deeply, without any hesitation or pause, until he was fully inside.

Cassandra’s body arched in response, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps as she held onto him, feeling every inch of him buried within her.

Chapter 5

Alexander Wren finally let loose, his rigid and hot member moving in and out with ferocious speed. The only sounds were the shameful sloshing within Cassandra Vale’s walls and her uncontrollable whimpers whenever he thrust deep. Though his movements were anything but skilled, the sheer force of his actions sent waves of pleasure coursing through Cassandra, overwhelming her senses.

With a relentless final push, Cassandra’s body quaked, her inner walls tightening and releasing a small burst of liquid. Alexander grunted deeply but did not climax yet. His movements became stiff, and it was a full three seconds before he slowly withdrew, causing new discomfort as his vein-covered member scraped against her sensitive walls. Cassandra’s slick entrance clenched tightly, unwilling to let him go. Alexander leaned in, gently stroking her sweat-soaked cheek. "Relax, don't clench so hard."

Cassandra lay nestled in his arms, her damp eyelashes lifting as she struggled to catch her breath. "Don't...don't finish inside," she managed to whisper.

"Okay," he replied.

"I won't get pregnant, but...bathing is such a hassle," she added weakly, attempting to unbutton his remaining shirt with trembling fingers.

"I’ll help you; you don't have to worry about anything," Alexander assured her. He kissed her hand before sliding off the bed to undress. This time, he was less frenzied. His long, pale fingers undid each button methodically, the soft, dim light of the bedroom revealing his usual, composed demeanor – except for the steely hardness of his member, betraying the calm exterior.

Cassandra’s chest heaved as she tried to steady herself. Then she heard Alexander’s voice, "Can you turn over for me?"

Before she could reply, he gently lifted and flipped her onto her stomach, positioning her rear up. He gave a soft, resounding smack to her buttocks. It wasn’t painful, but the sound echoed through the bedroom, and Cassandra was more shocked than hurt at this foreign, provocative behavior.

Alexander wasted no time. He re-entered her, the aftermath of her earlier climax making her even wetter and tighter. The intrusion was met with resistance from her snug, freshly sensitive walls. Cassandra’s body reacted strongly, her legs trying to move, but he held her down firmly, pushing deep again. This position allowed him to penetrate even further, the tender flesh inside wrapping around him tightly.

Cassandra braced against the bed, attempting to crawl forward, hoping to lessen the depth of his thrusts. But each time she moved, Alexander’s hands pinned her waist and pulled her back, burying himself completely within her. His sack slapped against her with each forceful thrust, the intensity turning her bottom a shade of red.

"Ah..." Cassandra could no longer form coherent sentences, her body trembling uncontrollably with each thrust. Her arms gave out, leaving her chin and breasts pressed against the sheets, tears wetting her lashes.

Cassandra lost track of time, but finally, with one last powerful thrust, Alexander erupted inside her, filling her with scalding release. The sensation caused her walls to spasm, triggering another intense climax for her.
